Ole Sarge usually lets people have their say and lets it go at that. After all, that is the essence of freedom of speech. But sometimes people cross the boundary that separates decency and free speech from the arrogant, heartless and cruel. When that happens Ole Sarge feels he must reply as in the email below:

I have read your email that is posted at
www.anyservicemember.org, the one in which you said
"Any stupid bastard who voluntarily joins the military to fight Bush's war deserves to die."
Freedom of speech has permitted you to have your say. I wonder if you would have the courage to be so vitriolic if you were a citizen of another country; say, North Korea, China, or pre-Sadaam Iraq.
That freedom of speech which you have used was bought and paid for by the blood, sweat and tears of volunteers and draftees shed over the last 300+ years.
I notice that you didn't say anything about "Kennedy's war", or "Johnson's war", or anyone else's war. But that's alright. I do not expect anything more from someone as ignorant and morally defunct as you appear to be.
I have lost many friends and relatives in the battles for freedom. I, too, have paid a price. I am disabled and have lived in constant pain for the past 43 years.
Yes, I volunteered. If I am a "stupid bastard" to have volunteered for military service (the United States Marine Corps) and shed my blood for my God, my family and my Country, then so be it. But I would rather be a stupid bastard and be loyal to those that matter than to be smart like you.
And to be even "stupider", my best friends (many of whom are now deceased) and I would do it all again if it were possible. Not that we like to fight because we don't. I never knew a Marine who liked to fight. But war is an ugly fact and there are worse things than going to war and dying (if necessary) for your country. And it really doesn't matter whether it is "Bush's War", "Nixon's War", "Kennedy's War", etc.
To quote John Stuart Mill (1806-1873), "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. ... The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." (1868)
I do not know your stand on war in general, Mr. Schaedler, nor do I care. And I could care less what your political affiliations are. What I infer from the words you wrote is that you are a pathetic excuse for a man.
Wartime service with the young men I knew in the Marine Corps was the most rewarding experience of my life. To serve once more with them would be an even more incredible experience. One which you, Mr. Schaedler, will never know. How sad.
I thank God for all of the millions of "stupid bastards" who have volunteered, and continue to volunteer, to serve in America's wars.

Dear Darry, (and every member of our Armed forces)
That Blooming Idiot needs to be watched. He's a danger to all humanity. You answered his ignorant rantings very well. Keep up the good work.
According to him, I guess all the male members of my family were b....... also. You see, my parents came over here from Italy. My father enlisted in the US Army. BOTH of my parents went to school and learned to read and write English so they could become US citizens.
Both of my brothers enlisted in the service of our country. My husband enlisted in the service of our Country. My brother-in-law and his son were both in the Marine Corps. I had another nephew who was killed while serving this country.
If that Idiot has nothing better to say, he needs his mouth taped shut!! I hope he doesn't have any family members that have to be SO ashamed of him.
You take care, and God Bless you.
